About Bucharest

The exterior of the Romanian Athenaeum concert hall in Bucharest on a clear summer's day

A bit like Romania’s platou taranesc (traditional peasant platter), Bucharest is full of surprises. Walk past the neoclassical buildings in the historic centre, and you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in Paris. But head to a local mahalla (neighbourhood) dotted with old-school markets and concrete housing blocks, and you’ll know you’re in Eastern Europe. Discover the hidden pockets of Old Town, try a mustard-slathered mici (skinless sausage) in Obor Market or hear what life was like during the Communist era as you hop between craft beer bars – all while connecting with the people who live here.
