About Cusco

A group of travelers walking through a plaza in Cusco while on a city walking tour

History’s baked into the streets in Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire. At 3400 m above sea level, the thin air can take some getting used to, but there’s tons to explore once you acclimatise. Snack your way through San Pedro Market, trying delicacies like hen soup, beef heart skewers and maybe even roasted guinea pig. Or uncover Peru’s love affair with the Pisco sour as you learn how to shake one up like a pro. History buffs needn’t leave the city with the Sacsayhuaman fortress and Coricancha Temple within walking distance, but if it’s Inca ruins you’re here for, a day trip to Machu Picchu is a must.
